ST. LOUIS (AP) – Manager Manny Acta had reason to smile, even after his Cleveland Indians lost 2-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cleveland made it to game 58 without getting blanked, leaving the Detroit Tigers as the lone team in the major leagues that hasn't been shut out. last year, the Indians were blanked 15 times.
“Step in the right direction,” Acta said with a double thumbs-up. “That's great. It took over two-something months for us to get shut out. It's a credit to the guys. They've been battling. It had to happen.”
Carlos Beltran had three hits, including his NL-leading 17th home run.
Michael Brantley had two singles to extend his hitting streak to 17 games for Cleveland. but the Indians had only three runners in scoring position against Kyle Lohse (6-1), who gave up three hits in 7 2-3 innings and ended a string of five straight no-decisions.
Beltran homered with two outs in the third and had three of the seven hits by St. Louis, which has won three of four. Shane Robinson doubled to start the eighth and scored on Rafael Furcal's one-out sacrifice fly against Jeremy Accardo.
The game took just 2 hours, 14 minutes, the fastest of the season for both teams.
Masterson (2-6) struck out six with no walks in seven innings, while giving up five hits. he retired the side in order in three of his last four innings but is 1-4 in his last seven starts.
Beltran was impressed with the amount of movement on Masterson's pitches.
“I feel personally sometimes he doesn't know where the ball's going,” Beltran said “The catcher's leaning one way, and the ball's landing the other way, and I guess because the ball moves so much it's hard for him to control it. he has the potential to be a good pitcher”.
Masterson worked at least six innings for the ninth straight start, but has lost his last three. He's accustomed to lack of run support given the Indians have totaled three or fewer runs eight of his last nine appearances.
“Somebody's got to sacrifice for the good of the team,” Masterson said. “I feel like if I shut them out, we're still playing. There's always room for improvement.”
Lohse moved a game above .500 at 108-107 with his first win over the Indians since 2004, when he worked an inning of relief in a 12-inning game. The outing was his longest of the season, one out longer than on opening day when he won at Miami. he threw a season-high 105 pitches.
Yadier Molina threw out Asdrubal Cabrera attempting to steal, ending the eighth on Marc Rzepczynski's only pitch, and Jason Motte finished for his 11th save in 14 chances.
Brantley is 24 for 65 (.369) during the longest current streak in the majors.
Molina reached a pair of firsts for St. Louis, batting third the first time in his career and getting caught stealing for the first time in six attempts, with Carlos Santana making a nice throw to end the sixth. The slow-footed Molina usually catches foes napping.
St. Louis won with a rejiggered lineup after Matt Holliday was scratched just before game time because of back spasms. Beltran stayed in the second slot in the new lineup, and nine of his homers have come batting second.
NOTES: David Freese didn't leave the box on a groundout to third ending the fourth, believing he'd fouled a ball off his left foot. he turned the opposite direction for several seconds before pivoting back and noting the Indians had left the field, then Freese and manager Mike Matheny briefly complained to home plate umpire mark Wegner. … RHP Ubaldo Jimenez, who starts the series finale against rookie RHP Joe Kelly, has a 3.09 ERA in seven starts with a win or no decision, but is 0-4 with a 10.42 ERA when taking the loss. RHP Joe Kelly starts in his major league debut, one day after his 24th birthday, in place of injured Jaime Garcia for the Cardinals. Kelly is 2-5 at Triple-A Memphis but leads the Pacific Coast League with a 2.86 ERA. He's a distant relative of gangster George “Machine Gun” Kelly.

The Boston Celtics has the second worst season in their history and now they have something to look forward to. they will get the chance for the first pick in the NBA draft.
Fifty years after winning their first championship, the Celtics had a miserable season with injuries and inconsistent play from young players that saw them lose 18 games on a trot, the longest in their franchise history. The Celtics finished the season with 24-58. In their last 11 games, they went 2-9, with the two wins coming by just 2 points.
Celtics executive director of basketball operations, Danny Ainge, said that the team did not come together and never played to its full potential.
Coach Doc Rivers has just one season left in his contract and wants an extension. He thinks that the Celtics have the ability to show a great improvement next season. Rivers said that with the health of the players improving and a little improvement in the roster would make the Celtics a playoff team.
The Celtics might just get the chance if they win the first pick in the draft lottery on May 22, 2007. it could bring Greg Oden, Ohio State center, to the team. However, the Celtics have the second worst record in the NBA. Memphis has the worst record with 22-60 and that means the Celtics have just a 19.9 percent chance of getting the no. 1 pick in the draft.
Oden along with Kevin Durant from Texas in most probability will be the top two picks when the draft begins.
The Celtics know that their first round pick in the draft cannot be lower than no. 5 but that could be used by them in trade talks as they scout around for a veteran star to join the young team.
In three seasons that Rivers has coached the Celtics, their win total has been dropping constantly from 45 to 33 to 24. This is because of injuries, inexperienced young players and weak defense.
While most will enjoy the three-day weekend to mark the beginning of summer, Memorial Day is much more. It’s the day set aside to honor the men and women from the United States military who have died in service to their country.
This national holiday is especially poignant while our country is at war. Soldiers are still fighting in far-flung corners of the world for the liberty that affords us a carefree day in the park, chowing down on barbecue or watching the Indianapolis 500 — what most of us will do this weekend.
It’s OK, veterans can be remembered while you’re having fun, but there are numerous ways to honor soldiers, too.
Display a grand ol’ flag at your home.
Attend the special service and presentation of the colors by local Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The Valley will remember its heroes with these ceremonies:
9 a.m., Preston Cemetery, 8328 308th Ave. S.E., Issaquah
10 a.m., Fall City Cemetery
11 a.m., North Bend Cemetery
Noon, Snoqualmie Valley Veterans Memorial at American Legion Post, downtown Snoqualmie, across the street from City Hall.
Visit a national cemetery where volunteers have decorated gravesites with a U.S. flag. The Tahoma National Cemetery is east of Kent on 158 acres. Noteworthy is the Memorial Walkway with 23 memorials that commemorate soldiers of various wars. a Blue Star Memorial to honor all veterans is north of the Public Information Center.
Use Memorial Day to also honor family members who have died, not just servicemen and women.
Say thanks to a living veteran. let him or her know his or her service is appreciated.
Volunteer to assist veterans. go to www.volunteer.va.gov.
Take time to learn a little about the holiday and its Civil War roots, and then share it with a friend.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Newly released documentary film footage shows embattled Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker shortly after his election describing a “divide and conquer” strategy for taking on unions by first going after public employees' collective bargaining rights.
Walker's opponents insist the remarks undermine the Republican governor's long-held claim that the polarizing law he and the GOP-led Legislature pushed through, stripping most public workers of nearly all their collective bargaining rights, was meant solely as a budget-balancing measure. they also say the comments signal that Walker ultimately means to go after private sector unions by making Wisconsin a right-to-work state, which would allow workers to not pay dues even if they are covered by a union contract.
Walker said Friday that he has no desire to pursue right-to-work legislation and no such bill would pass the Legislature under his watch. Speaking at a news conference at the Wisconsin Republican Party convention, Walker said his “divide and conquer” comment was about protecting the taxpayers from unions he said stood in the way of helping the state deal with a budget shortfall.
“For too long, a handful of special interests controlled things at the state and the local level,” Walker said. “I wanted to stand up and fight on behalf of the hardworking taxpayers. We have firmly put the taxpayers of this state back in charge of the state and local governments. That's a fight I'll continue to have.”
Walker, who faces a recall election next month largely because of anger over the collective bargaining law, made the documentary remarks in January 2011 in response to a question from Beloit billionaire Diane Hendricks, who subsequently gave his campaign $510,000 – more than any other person. she asked Walker if he could make Wisconsin a “completely red state, and work on these unions, and become a right-to-work” state.
“Well, we're going to start in a couple weeks with our budget adjustment bill,” Walker responded. “The first step is we're going to deal with collective bargaining for all public employee unions, because you use divide and conquer. so for us, the base we've got for that is the fact that we've got – budgetarily we can't afford not to. If we have collective bargaining agreements in place, there's no way not only the state but local governments can balance things out.”
Tom Barrett, the Democratic mayor of Milwaukee who lost to Walker in the 2010 election and who is running against him again in a June 5 recall election, has been accusing Walker of secretly wanting to make Wisconsin a right-to-work state. Barrett told reporters at a news conference in West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb, that Walker's remarks on the video left him flabbergasted.
“It is so clear whose side he is on. He's not on the side of the working people of this state. He's not on the side of the middle class. He's trying to curry favor with his masters who are in the right wing of the Republican Party,” Barrett said. “Now is the moment of truth. now he's going to have to say whether or not he would veto a right-to-work bill if it hit his desk.”
Walker co-sponsored right-to-work legislation in 1993 as a freshman in the state Assembly but he stressed Friday he has no interest in signing such a bill into law as governor.
“It's not going to get to my desk,” Walker said. “I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure it isn't there.”
Walker said he has been a good partner with private unions to help bring jobs to Wisconsin.
Supporters believe right-to-work would give more freedom to workers and make it more attractive for companies to invest and hire employees. Opponents say it undermines unions and doesn't help the economy.
The Walker footage was first reported late Thursday by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Walker faced a $3.6 billion budget deficit when he took office in January 2011. Despite widespread skepticism, he has maintained since unveiling his “budget repair bill” that February that the collective bargaining restrictions written into the bill were needed to give the state and local governments the flexibility to confront looming budget cuts.
Filmmaker Brad Lichtenstein captured the footage while shooting “As goes Janesville,” a documentary on the city of Janesville's efforts to create jobs after a General Motors plant in town closed. The conversation took place at the Beloit headquarters of ABC Supply, the roofing wholesaler and siding distributor Hendricks co-founded.
Lichtenstein has worked for Democratic campaigns and donated to Barrett, but he said the timing of the clip's release wasn't linked to the recall. he said he planned to release snippets of the film only after he completed it and showed it to the people it follows most closely and finished those screenings last month.
“It's absolutely not a political attack. This is 28 seconds in a 10-minute trailer in a 90-minute film,” he said. The documentary is expected to be shown at film festivals and on PBS stations this fall.
The video makes for interesting campaign fodder, but it's unlikely it will sway many voters. After a year and a half of recall talk, most people have already made up their minds about whether they support or oppose Walker.
Associated Press writers Scott Bauer in Green Bay, Carrie Antlfinger in West Allis and Gretchen Ehlke in Milwaukee contributed to this report.

Should taxpayer money ever be used to fund a sports stadium?
That is one part of the political debate/mess in Minnesota concerning the building of a new stadium for the NFL’s Vikings, even though failure to build them a new stadium will almost certainly lead to the team leaving.
But it is a legitimate question for all communities in these challenging economic and budget times. I’m not going to get into the value of sports to a community, economic benefits, etc…
My simple answer is yes, but with a few caveats.
First, it depends on which taxpayer’s money you are using. I have no problem with “user” taxes — whether it be revenue from gambling or cigarettes as part of the funding. No one is forcing anyone to use what is being taxed.
Second, I have no problem with so-called “tourist” taxes being part of the funding. I have lived in Southwest Florida since 1999. The number of nights I’ve spent in a Lee or Collier hotel room is four. I don’t know many other full-time residents who have spent many nights in local hotels, either. Is increasing the bed tax raising taxes? Yes. Is it raising yours and my taxes? I would argue no.
But if a stadium is being funded any other way, then I think the community that is being asked to pay for it should get to vote on whether they want to. on top of that, the team that is asking for the stadium money should want the public to vote on it. Because the team is going to get their new stadium from someone, somewhere. The fans know it. So they’ll give you what you want.
It’s just better to make us feel like partners when really the feeling is more like extortion.
I know, I know. That’s ludicrous and if they put it up for a vote they would never get their money. really? Community after community votes to improve or build new stadiums for its sports teams because sports is a major part of American life.
And it’s getting bigger and more important by the day (we can debate whether that should be the case some other time).
I am rarely critical of Craig Brush and the Florida Everblades. Why? I’ve realized in part because whatever issues I have seem small when compared to the fact that they built Germain Arena and paid for it themselves nearly 15 years ago. Because they did that, Southwest Florida has benefited greatly. As a sports fan, they have earned my good faith.
Which is why when they came out in the last couple of years wanting some help from Lee County about selling the arena, I thought the county at the very least should give the matter serious consideration (which they have not done). to me, the Blades have earned public trust.
Almost all of these major pro sports teams don’t care about public trust, they just want the public’s money. Which is why we should demand the first if we are to give the latter.
Even if it could cost us our favorite sports team.

Slaughterhouse has pushed by back their upcoming album ‘Welcome to: Our House’ from may 15th to June 12th according to the third installment of their ongoing vlog. The group is currently on tour and they will be hitting up the Clubhouse in Tempe, Arizona tonight before heading to California and Nevada for the weekend.
The vlog also shows footage of new York City police arresting Joe Budden just before he hits the stage at the Best buy Theater in new York. The rapper was apparently taken in because a bench warrant was issued against the rapper for a traffic violation which took place back in 2007.
The album will be the second from Slaughterhouse which includes Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9 and Joell Ortiz and Eminem has signed up as executive producer of the record. The first single off of the record debuted back in February when Funkmaster Flex played it on Hot 97 and ‘Hammer Dance’ released through iTunes on March 13th.
The album’s delay doesn’t appear to have resulted in any changes to the group’s current tour schedule and it looks like Slaughterhouse will still finish off their tour in early may. Two dates in April, the 20th and 27th, still have no venues attached to them.
